This is John Brennan, active member of the VHCMA and the 114th Avn Co Assn. I'm collecting VN era "nicknames" that in-country Army copter crews painted on their aircraft. Future book by aviation publisher is in the making. Have cataloged over 1,000 names to date. I expect that number to exceed 2,000 when complete. Please pass the word. Would very much like to include as many personalized copter names as possible.
Nose art & nickname photos will constitute majority of book. Database of all known Army helicopter "nicknames" will be included. Have earmarked the Army Aviation Museum & Texas Tech as post-production recipient for "nickname" database research. From out of the shadows and into the light it's our turn to be recognized.
Send "nickname" info and/or scanned pics to johnmailman@yahoo.com
Regards, John Brennan, former SP5, 114 AHC, Flight Operations Coordinator, Vinh Long AAF, Mekong Delta, 1970-71

I am really glad to see someone took the time to give the "Hawks" a website. They seemed to have lost their identity through the many reorganizations of the 101st. I am proud to say I had the opportunity to serve with the likes of Gary Dombroski, Mike Chase, Stan Bean, Bill Neubeur, Jack Hauck, Jim Vick, Keith Brandt, Richard Hill and some others that the names escape me at the moment. They taught me much that lasted through the next 20 years and beyond. I carried the 31 callsign for the new 20 years and even use it today as Longbow 31. Thanks again HAWKS.

Correction on the Ops Officer, his name was CPT Rudy C. Perkins, I believe that's right, he was always getting mixed up with the CDR because his initials were the same, a great guy with a lot of humor. The last time I heard about LTC Perry was the was fielding the UH-60, don't know where or exactly when, don't even know if that's a fact. It's hard to remember everybodys name back then, but some are coming to mind like SGT Snyder, Roger Ewing, Pete Shrunk (sp?) CWO Murphy,CWO Tilden, LT Beach, SGT Dinsmore,SP4 Bailey, SSG Briggs, CWO Bryant, CWO Budd, PFC File, and SP4 McMillan, that's it for now, Alzeimer's is setting in, back to my bed.

Thanks for the memories. When I arrived at Phu Bai in July 1968, I was met by COL Ted Crozier, Group CDR, yep he was there at the flight line greeting soldiers and shaking their hands, believe it or not he's still alive and living in Clarksville TN, after retiring he was the Mayor of Clarksville. We all loaded up on the deuce and had a short ride to Camp Eagle, where my ultimate destination was D/101, I was sure we were being transported to the Ashau Valley, as they had us believe in SERTS. Forget your MOS you are now a GRUNT. One thing I've gotta say about the 101st is they trained you and prepared you for the worst, whatever it was going to be I was ready for it. D/101 was a welcome site, even thought it was smack dab in the middle of a grave yard. Shortly after my arrival we were rocketed, I seem to recall the mess tent was hit, anyway I did like everyone else, I hit the grave. LTC Ronald C. Perry was the CDR, and Martin Shuey was the XO, CPT Ronald C. Perry was the OPS officer, later on I saw him again at Ft Campbell, he got out of aviation and was was the XO of an Infantry Brigade, I believe it was the 2-101 INF BDE. Anyway it's good to hear from all of you after these years and I hope that all of my former comrades are doing well. God Bless America.

Looking for anyone who served with my uncle in Co D from June'68 to Jan '69. My uncle was Sgt Paul Walters. He was a door gunner. If you remember him and are interested in corresponding with him, drop me a line at: gringo47117@sbcglobal.net He was previously a grunt in the 196th and 199th Light Infantry Brigades and was wounded twice before shipping over to the 101st. Thanks!

Thought I sent an earlier note, however my computer skills are obviously lacking.Have enjoyed the Guest Book comments. Have seen few Hawks since departing PhuBai in Dec 69.Mike Jones stopped by when in Williamsburg and it was super seeing him again. Mike dressed up like a girl for a Bn party since I promised Grayhawk I would bring a girl to th party. He was spechless after coming to the jeep and finding out he had been "had" Did see Billy Budd at Ft Knox. Missed him and others in Germany as they had departed Fligerhorst when I arrived.Talk with Neil Jocsing occasionally as well as Bob Heisterman (Hawk 3)Hope to contact Ron Perry ( first Hawk 6) and see about some kind of get together. I remember my days in PhuBai well. What a super group of cobra pilots...and maintenance guys to work with. Was not aware Ron Cowden was killed in a Rucker mishap Certainly recall John Hauck and enjoyed his article.
Take care
